With this issue the Greenwood Gleaner enters upon the 50th years of service to
the people of Greenwood and vicinity.
The first printing press was brought to Greenwood in 1891 by H.W. Spears, who,
with George Bigby, started the "Greenwood Gleaner." Succeeding editors have been
H.H. Hartson, J.C. Noyes and in 1916 the present editor purchased the business
and equipment.
That the judgment of all concerned in having a paper in Greenwood is evident by
the business we have increased trend of patronage.
We feel that our efforts have been appreciated and we in turn fully appreciate
the great help accorded us by the progressive people of Greenwood and vicinity.
It is an earnest desire that the splendid cooperation between the people of this
vicinity and its newspaper continue to merit the patronage given us and enjoy
the same splendid assistance toward making the Greenwood Gleaner a leader among
small town journals.
Regardless of any effort we may put forth we cannot make a good paper alone, and
we are thankful that we are among people wh appreciate the value of a newspaper
enough to help us in attaining the same degree of paper we like to publish.
The Gleaner is the newspaper of the people of this community and we trust they
will continue to make it a fitting representation of this fine section of
Wisconsin.
We want to thank our many advertisers, correspondents and subscribers for their
very important patronage and help. But for each and every one of you, the
"Gleaner" could not exist.
It is to the advantage of all of our subscribers to read the advertisers' words
in the Gleaner and patronize the advertiser as much as possible , because it is
the local businessman who can give you first class merchandise and service and
he is always there and willing to help you as a friend and neighbor, something
the mail order houses cannot do. It is yur local business, who helps you by
helping keep up your local schools, churches and civic projects.
The Gleaner is your paper published each week for your enjoyment and
convenience. Without your help and cooperation we can do nothing, but with it we
can keep the Gleaner going as a fitting representative of this fine section of
Wisconsin.
It is with this spirit that the Gleaner enters into its 50th year of service to
this community, May it continue to guide as well as serve in the up building of
Greenwood.
Again we thank you for past support and wish you much joy and happiness and
prosperity in 1940.
