‘Firsts’ for 1973 (4 January 1973)
The ‘firsts’ of the year always receive notice, and in keeping with this
time-honored custom, The Clark County Press publishes the following list:
First baby born at memorial Hospital, Neillsville: a daughter to Mr. and Mr.
Lewis Walde of rural Greenwood, weighing six pounds, 14 ½ ounces, January 2.
First person to pay taxes: Albert Smith. He was previous, making his payment
December 18. A number of people do this customarily because of effect on income
taxes, according to City Clerk William Gallagher.
First to pay dog tax: Albert Wilson.
Vehicles driven by Janet J. Schultz, Marshfield, and Gerald A. Welch, Chili,
were involved in the first county traffic accident reported in 1973. The mishap
occurred at 9:50 a.m. January 1 on County Trunk Y, an eighth of a mile north of
Chili. According to the report, the two north bound autos collected when the
lead Welch station wagon slowed to turn into a church driveway. No injury was
reported. Damage was estimated at over $200.
