Asselin, Florence Dorothy (7 May 1921 - 29 August 2014)
Florence D. Asselin, age 93, of Thorp, WI, passed away on Friday, August 29,
2014, at the Clark County Health Care Center, in Owen. A Memorial Mass will be
held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 6, 2014, at St. Hedwig’s Chapel, in
Thorp. Rev. Janusz Kowalski will officiate and burial of cremains will follow in
Old St. Hedwig’s Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the chapel, on
Saturday, from 9:00 a.m. until time of service.
Florence Dorothy Wiernasz was born in Racine, WI on May 7, 1941 to Andrew and
Angeline (Somborski) Wiernasz. At the age of nine, Florence’s family moved to
Thorp, where she attended Thorp public schools, graduating from Thorp High
School in 1940. After completing her education, she worked at the Wolf Drug
Store in Thorp. She was united in marriage to Lyle “Chubb” Asselin on July 23,
1942, at St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church, in Thorp.
They moved to Roswell, NM while Chubb served in the U. S. Air Force. Upon the
request of her family, Florence returned to Thorp to operate the family
business, Wiernasz Meat Market. Later, she also worked at the Thorpedo
Restaurant, The Ben Franklin Store, ITT Life Insurance Corp., and seasonally at
Figi’s.
Florence had many interests, but especially enjoyed knitting, embroidery,
woodworking, and sewing. She was a member of St. Bernard-St. Hedwig’s Catholic
Church and its Parish Council of Catholic Women.
Florence is survived by three children: Phyllis Pickett of Streamwood, IL,
Thomas (Rebecca) Asselin of Vesper, WI, and Bradley Asselin of Greenwood, WI;
six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and
friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lyle, on January 18,
1986; one great-granddaughter, Grace Pickett; one sister Helen Gac; and four
brothers: Ben, John, Frank and Edward Wiernasz.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Adult
Development Services at P.O. Box 66, Greenwood, WI 54437.
