Hammond, Ellen (Nearly Seriously Injured – 13 Oct 1916)
Friday afternoon Miss Ellen Hammond had a very close call to serious injury. She
was with her natural history class, walking along the road near the Altemus farm
east of town when Arnold Yankee drove along in his auto. He turned out to the
left of the road, but Miss Hammond stepped to the left also with the result that
the car ran into her. Yankee had shut off the power, but the car had skidded and
struck Miss Hammond, throwing her to one side, knocking her down, and rendering
her unconscious. It was thought that she was badly hurt and she was taken home
and a d Octor summoned, but she is all right again and is none the worse for her
experience, outside of a severe shaking up and slight bruising.
