Marine Cpl. Edward J. Berres, son of James P. and Barbara F. Berres, Rt. 2,
Greenwood, has been promoted to his present rank while serving with 3rd Force
Service Support Group on Okinawa.
A 1983 graduate of Greenwood High School, he joined the Marine Corps in June
1983.

Capling, David J – Marine Sgt. (Service Notes - 1985)
Marine Sgt. David J. Capling, son of Dr. and Mrs. Robert D. Capling of 5275
Second Avenue, Pittsville, recently received a Meritorious Unit Commendation
while stationed with Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron, Marine Corps Air
Station, Beaufort, South Carolina.
Capling received the decoration for his meritorious service in providing
operational and administrative support to the Air Station, and to Marine
Aircraft Group 31, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, Beaufort, from January 1 to
December 31, 1984.
During this time, the unit provided administrative support to more than 750
personnel to the squadron and staff of Marine Corps Air Station, Beaufort, as
well as contributed to the combat readiness of the tactical squadrons.
A 1977 graduate of Pittsville High School, Pittsville, he joined the Marine
Corps in September 1978.

Friemoth, Jeff F. – Navy Seaman Recruit (Service Notes - 1985)
Navy Seaman Recruit Jeff F. Friemoth, son of Mr. and Mrs. Milton Friemoth, of
Rt. 4 Neillsville, has completed recruit training at Recruit Training Command,
Great Lakes, Illinois. During Friemoth’s eight-week training cycle, he studied
general military subjects designed to prepare him for further academic and
on-the-job training on one of the Navy’s 85 fields.
Friemoth’s studies included seamanship, close order drill, Naval history and
first aid. Personnel who complete this course of instruction are eligible for
three hours of college credit in Physical Education Hygiene.
A 1985 graduate of Neillsville High School, he joined the Navy in September
1985.

Sandy Helm, Rt. 2 Granton has been elected RHA (Residence Halls’ Association)
representative for Neale Hall at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
As a representative, Helm provides students of the residence hall community
unlimited opportunities to meet with each other and all segments of the campus
population in social, cultural and recreational programs designed to contribute
to total learning.

Graduate school officials at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh have announced
the names of the 74 graduate students who qualified for master’s degrees at the
end of the summer session. The list has 68 students from Wisconsin, two from
Illinois, three from Michigan and one from Minnesota.
James W. Meier, 4 Huron Street, Neillsville, was among those graduating students
receiving a master of education degree with emphasis on guidance.

Steve Sternitzky, son of Mr. and Mrs. Duane Sternitzky, 409 E. Division St., is
among students in the Pacific University College of Optometry who are officers
of Phi Theta Upsilon (PTU), a service organization for optometry students.
Sternitzky, a third year student in optometry at Pacific, is vice chancellor.
PTU has done service projects such as adjusting eye glass frames of patients in
nursing homes and redecorating the children’s area of Pacific optometric clinic.

Zeno, Dave R. – Army Private (Service Notes - 1985)
Army Private Dave R. Zeno, son of Dawn L. and Ford Zeno, of Rt. 2 Greenwood, has
completed basic training at Fort Dix, New Jersey.
During the training, students received instruction in drill and ceremonies,
weapons, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, first aid,
and Army history and traditions.
He is a 1985 graduate of Greenwood High School.
