Gilbertson, Shirley A. (12 October 1935 - 13 August 2014)
Shirley A. (Mathews) Gilbertson, 79, of Black River Falls died Wednesday Aug.
13, 2014, at Family Heritage Care Center in Black River Falls.
Shirley was born March 17, 1935, in Humbird to Clarence and Ottilly (Jahn)
Zimmerman. Shirley attended Humbird schools. Shirley married Roy Mathews Oct.
12, 1553, in Black River Falls. The couple moved to Milwaukee and lived there
for two years before returning to Jackson County. Roy preceded Shirley in death
March 18, 1980. She later married Leonard Gilbertson in La Crosse County.
Leonard also preceded Shirley in death.
Shirley worked for Humbird Canning. She also cleaned for Judge Louis Drecktrah,
Tom and Jessie Bible and Louis and Nyla Musser. In Shirley’s free time, she
enjoyed embroidery and quilting. In the summertime, she spent time tending to
her garden and canning much of what she grew. She also had a love for animals.
In the wintertime, Shirley and Leonard would spend their time in Texas where
they enjoyed fishing and the outdoors.
Shirley is survived by one daughter, Barb (Gary) Hoyer of Black River Falls; two
sons, Randy Mathews of Black River Falls and Cliff (Paulette) Mathews of Black
River Falls; and one step-son, Leonard Gilbertson Jr. of Green Bay. She is also
survived by seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Mathews and Leonard
Gilbertson; her parents, Clarence and Ottilly (Jahn) Zimmerman; two brothers,
Harold and Lyle Zimmerman; and two sisters, Ilene McNealy and Vivian Cronk.
Funeral services for Shirley were held Saturday, Aug. 16, 2014, at 11 a.m. at
the Buswell Funeral Home (715-284-2231) 106 2nd St. Black River Fall, Family and
friends called at the funeral home Saturday, Aug. 16, 2014, from 10 a.m. until
the time of services. Burial followed in the Sullivan Cemetery, Township of
Brockway.
Memorials may be given to Black River Memorial Hospice.
