Sowieja, Vincent F. (18 July 1892 - 7 March 1973)

Vincent F. Sowieja, 80, of Greenwood died, at 7 a.m. March 7 at Memorial Hospital in Neillsville. Funeral services were held Saturday morning from St. Mary’s Catholic Church. The Rev. Leander Koopman officiated. Burial was made in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

The son of Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas Sowieja, he was born July 18, 1892 in Poland. He came to America with his parents at the age of six and received his education in schools at Swanville, Minn. He was married February 10, 1920, at Swanville, Minn., to Mary Christina Zivilling, who survives. After their marriage, the couple farmed in Minnesota until 1925 and for several years remained at Swanville, where he was employed as a garage mechanic. Then they moved to Little Falls, Minn., where they operated a theatre, later moving to Duluth, where he was a welder.

In 1929 they moved to Milwaukee, where he was a welder, and in 1950 went to Atwood. Here they operated the Hilltop Tavern for 15 years. In 1965 they returned and moved into Greenwood, and had resided there since. Mr. Sowieja was member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

Surviving besides his wife, are two daughters, Mrs. John (Ramona) Pavlow of Rhinelander and Mrs. Allen (Eleanor) Lindenberg of West Allis; four sons, Eugene and Jerome of Greenwood, James of Owen and Ambrose of Hartland; 25 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. A brother, John Sowieja of Dodge Center, Minn.; and three sisters: Mrs. Klay Jendro of Little Falls, Minn., Mrs. Marian Stanton of Palm Springs, Calif.; and Mrs. Julanne Allen of Burbank, Calif., also survive.
