Columbia (15 March 1973)
Spring is no longer “just around the corner.”
It arrived ahead of schedule, calendar-wise, last week; but winter still has a
chance for a rebuttal.
The ice in Fall River cracked up Wednesday and floated down stream. Due to heavy
rain over the weekend the water was very high Sunday, but has lowered at this
Monday forenoon writing.
The red-winged black birds have arrived and Thursday afternoon, when returning
from Neillsville; the William Sollbergers stopped to watch a great number of
robins that had settled on a large field directly north of the old John
Sollberger home. The birds never looked at us nor made a sound. They appeared to
be very hungry and searching about for food.
Out-of-towners in our area over the weekend were: Mr. and Mrs. Russell Neubauer
and daughter, Karen, and their son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. James
Neubauer, all of Milwaukee; Lester Brown and sons, Lester and John, of Beloit;
and Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Peterson of Ripon.
Mr. and Mrs. George Mashin and Tara visited Mr. and Mrs. Carl Pyka and family
last week Wednesday evening.
