The Luchterhand family held their reunion on Sunday, July 29, 1979 at Arpin
Park. They were the descendants of William and Caroline Luchterhand, who came to
Loyal in 1870. The pioneer Luchterhand couple settled on 160 acres of forest
land one mile north and one mile east of Loyal. Like most Wisconsin pioneer farm
families they cut the great hardwood trees, piled and burned them, to clear some
land for farming. Wheat was seeded among the stumps and it grew well in the
soil, which was newly enriched with potash from the ashes of the trees. They
raised their family and built a farm of of the wilderness. Their third, fourth
and fifth generation of descendants spent the day picnicking, visiting and
remembering. Another reunion is planned for the fourth Sunday of July 1980.
Arlyn Shupe, Ione Luchterhand, Lorraine Krueger and Elsie Herdrich, the family
historians, are in on the planning committee.

Gene D. Ewert, 18, Route 2, Owen, died early Saturday morning in a home fire
some five miles southeast of Owen. The body was found in the basement at the
entrance of a laundry room. The home is that of Mrs. Anna Mae Lindgren, who is
away on vacation.

mid-February of this year, may have arrived there between 1 and 2 a.m., and
could have been preparing a lunch when the fire started. Authorities believed he
may have been unable to reach the kitchen faucet, and had gone to the basement
for water, then was unable to return to the upstairs because of dense smoke.
An examination of the body revealed no burns or other injuries, and it is
believed he died of smoke inhalation. He was alone in the house.
The body was taken to the Maurina Funeral Home in Owen.
