RAMON WALTER PETERSON
Date of Birth: April 26, 1918 in Curtiss, Wisconsin; third son of Henry and Bertha Peterson; brother to Armin, Evelyn, Franklin, Kathryn, Orlyn, and Lorrin.
Deceased: March 18, 1987 in Battle Creek, Michigan; interred in Fort Custer National Cemetery in Battle Creek.
Military History:
Prior to the U.S. entering World War II, Ramon joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in Montreal. After the U.S. entered the war, he enlisted in the U.S. Army on October 1942 at Fort Sheridan. He received his training at Goodman Field, Fort Knox, Kentucky; Patterson Field, Fairfield, Ohio; Camp Campbell, Kentucky; and Belleville, Illinois. On June 24, 1943 he graduated as a radio mechanic from the Army Air Forces Technical School at Scott Field, Illinois and left for overseas duty in October 1943. He then saw active duty in Communications in the Far East (Australia and the Philippines) where he was wounded. His final rank at the end of the war was Master Sergeant.
He joined the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and served for one year.
Personal:
Ramon graduated from Abbotsford High School in 1936. After WWII, he married Rachel A. Post and had one child: Diane Peterson. He settled in the Battle Creek area and served in various jobs including: the Knights Appliance Store; self-employment in TV repair; Putnam Radio Co., Central Electric Co., and the Federal Aviation Administration at Kellogg Field where he retired as an electronic maintenance technician.
He attended Maple United Methodist Church and was a member of Moose Lodge 326, Climax American Legion Post, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8715, National Rifle Association, Battle Creek Area Amateur Radio Club, and the Southern Michigan Amateur Radio Club.
