------ Weber, Catherine C. (103rd Birthday – 01/13/1967)
Mrs. Catherine C. Weber, Thorp, grand mother of Mrs. Raymond Weix and Mrs. Frank
Weix, both of Colby, celebrated her 103rd birthday Anniversary Friday, January
13, at her home. Mrs. Weix is believed to be the oldest living resident of Clark
county.
Born Catherine C. Heindl on January 13, 1864, at Charleston, Wis., she never saw
her father who served in the Grand Army of the Republic and died in a union
military hospital.
Her marriage to Michael Mertens took place on February 10, 1885. They operated a
farm near Thorp until his death in 1890. They had three children, Oscar Mertens
and Mrs. Irma Jones, deceased, and Miss Olga Mertens, who is living in Thorp.
Mrs. Raymond Weix and Mrs. Frank Weix both are daughters of Oscar Mertens.
In 1891, she married Max Weber and they lived in Thorp until his death in 1928.
Mrs. Weber has enjoyed good health and has been active in her community. She is
a member of St. Bernard’s Catholic church, of which she is the oldest living
member as well as the member of longest membership.
Mrs. Weber’s formula for a long life is moderation and hard work. “I always had
to work and I was always glad to work,” she said. “I believe busy persons are
happier and healthier. I have lived very moderately. I have never used tobacco
nor intoxicating liquor.”
Mrs. Weber’s hobbies include flowers and gardening.
