Haas, Kenneth (15 JUL 1946 – 5 AUG 1967)

A rural Stanley serviceman was killed in action in Vietnam on Saturday.

Marin Lance Cpl. Kenneth Haas, 21, was killed by a hostile grenade while in defensive position near Quang Nam. The parents were informed of the death Sunday.

Haas was the third marine from Chippewa County to die in southeast Asia since March. The first battle casualty of the war was Lance Cpl. Donald Johnson, Rt. 1, Gilman. The second was PFC Gerald Vizor, Rt. 2, Boyd.

Haas, whose birthday was July 15, was graduated from Stanley High School in 1965.

After graduation, he was employed by the Stanley Company and later by a firm in Waukesha. He enlisted in the Marine Corps one and one-half years ago.

Besides his parents, he is survived by seven brothers, Roger, Chicago; Keith, River Falls, Gale, Terrence, Ronald, Patrick and Michael, all at home; two sisters, Mrs. Robert Kyle, Ellsworth; and Pamela, at home; his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Haas, Rt. 3, Stanley; and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Lamarche, Rt. 2, Stanley.

His father is a member of the Chippewa County Board of Supervisors.
