Schultz, Walter (War Letter – 5 MAY 1918)
Dear Father: This being Mothers’ Day, we are all writing home to show that we
have not forgotten you. We all know that most of the people in the U.S. are
backing us in the greatest struggle the world has ever known. We all feel
confident that we are not here in vain and that after this war is over our
country will stand as the greatest one on earth. I know if the people at home
could see the conditions over here, and the willingness with which every man
over here does his bit, they would not hesitate to come across with what is
asked of them. Every person in the U.S. should do his utmost to stand back of
the men that are here. I am glad that I am here and not back in the States
watching the daily papers to see if my number has been drawn.
No doubt you people do a lot of worrying on my part. Don’t do it, for I am well
and am taking good care of myself. There may be times when you might not hear
from me quite as soon as you expect, but just the same I am thinking of you
folks. There are times when conditions are such that I won’t be able to write,
but will as soon as possible. When next you write Uncle Mertin, give him my
regards and tell him to write for I have lost his address.
Well, I will close, hoping this finds everything OK at home,
With Love, Walter
