Albrecht, Richard H. (29 August 1898 – 30 Nov1984)

Funeral services for Richard H. Albrecht, who operated a fuel business for many years, were held on Tuesday afternoon, December 4, from the Neillsville United Church of Christ. The Rev. Mark Voll officiated with the Gesche Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Burial was made in the Neillsville City Cemetery. Pallbearers were Hilbert Naedler, “Pete” Smith, Sam Ray, Russell Lyons, Arden Hinkelmann and George Crothers.

At the funeral, music was provided by Eileen Zank with congregational singing also offered. A Masonic service was held at the funeral home on Monday evening.

Albrecht, 86, succumbed at his Rt. 1 Neillsville home after a long illness. The deceased was born in Green Lake County on August 29, 1898, to Herman and Emma (Thiel) Albrecht. In 1905, he came with his parents to the Town of Hewett, where he received his education. He then attended a mechanic’s school in Kansas City, Missouri, and returned to Neillsville where he was employed at various garages as a mechanic.

In 1942, he purchased the Mobil Oil Station and ran the business for 11 years. He then owned and operated the Mobil bulk oil route. He retired in 1965 and continued to live in the Neillsville area.

On June 16, 1927, he married Emily Frei in Neillsville ceremonies. He was a member of the United Church of Christ, the local Masonic Lodge and the Order of the Eastern Star.

Surviving him, besides his wife, is a daughter, Mrs. Eugene (Sarah) Smigelski, San Jose, California; two sons, George of St. Paul and John of Lombok, California; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Paul; and a sister, Clara.

Backaus, Janene B. (2 February 1956 – 1 December 1984)

Mrs. Leslie (Janene) Backus, 28, of Rt. 2 Greenwood, died of cancer on Saturday, December 1, at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield.

The former Janene B. Vollrath was born February 2, 1956, in Marshfield, to Kenneth and Janis (Langfeldt) Vollrath. She was married on July 21, 1973 in Willard to Leslie Backus.

Survivors include her husband; two sons, Wade and Derek and a daughter, Holly, all at home; her parents; and two brothers, Randy and Darwin Vollrath, both of Greenwood.

Memorial services were held on Friday evening, December 7, at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Greenwood. The Rev. Richard Sorenson of Our Saviors and the Rev. Steven W. Carlson of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church of Marshfield officiated.

Braun, Hazel Irene (23 February 1909 - 8 December 1984)

Funeral services were held Tuesday morning, December 11, for Mrs. Hazel Irene Braun, 75. The Rev. C. Arlene Denzer officiated at the Granton United Methodist Church ceremonies; burial was made in the Neillsville City Cemetery, with Gilbertson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Music at the service was provided by Charlotte Drescher. Pallbearers were Max Opelt, Norman Braatz, Ray Hoeft, Lee Garbisch, Harry Zaleski and Robert Spry.

The deceased was born on February 23, 1909, in the Town of Fremont to Leo and Myrtle (Converse) Chapel. She attended rural schools and graduated from Granton High School. She also attended Stevens Point Normal School and taught school for 33 years, including stints as a special education teacher in Mayville, and Granton.

The deceased was married twice. Her first husband was Milburn Galbreath, whom she married on December 19, 1931, and he died on September 2, 1944. She married her second husband, Herbert Braun, on December 14, 1946, and he died on February 7, 1981.

At the time of her death on Saturday morning in Neillsville Memorial Hospital, she had been a resident of Neillsville Memorial Home.

Surviving her are two daughters, Mrs. George (Gwendolyn) Carstensen of Granton and Mrs. James (Marjorie) Barth of Chili; and a stepson, Douglas Braun, Neillsville. Joining them is a sister, Mrs. William (Josephine) Hiles, Neillsville; a brother, Ellis Chapel, Fox, Arkansas; seven grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death, besides her husbands, by a stepson Neal Braun.

Dux, Arthur (23 March 1901 – 1 December 1984)

Arthur Dux, 83, a longtime farmer in the Town of Pine Valley died on Saturday morning, December 1, in Neillsville Memorial Home. Mr. Dux made his home at 313 Oak St., Neillsville, but had been a resident of Memorial Home for the past three weeks due to failing health.

On March 23, 1901, the deceased was born in the Town of Pine Valley to August and Minnie (Seelow) Dux. He attended Hillside School and then began farming in Pine Valley. He was married on September 29, 1926, in Granton to Elsie Nitschke. He maintained the farming occupation until retiring in 1969.

After leaving the farm and moving into Neillsville, Dux served as a janitor for Svetlik’s Ford Garage for several years. He was a member of Pine Valley’s Zion Lutheran Church, ALC church council and worked as the church’s janitor for 40 years.

Surviving him, besides his wife, is a daughter, Mrs. Kenneth (Virginia) Karnitz, Neillsville; two grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Lillie and Helen.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon, December 5, from Zion Lutheran Church in Pine Valley with the Rev. Maynard Stokka officiating. Music was offered by Elsie Sischo and Marie Henning, accompanied by Cindy Strangfeld. Burial was made in the Town of Pine Valley Cemetery, and pallbearers were Art Ackerman, Melvin Dux, Gerald Eberhardt, Gordon Sharratt, Arnold Karl and Hans Kalsow. The Gesche Funeral Home of Neillsville was in charge of arrangements.

Helton, Wilber L. (? - 15 November 1984)

Wilber L. Helton, 72, of Rockford, Illinois, died November 15 as the result of a farming accident.

Illinois-native Helton was a retired teacher, coach and principal and graduated from Illinois State University in 1935. He also farmed in the Rockford area.

The deceased had often visited at the Sherren farm at rural Greenwood.

Surviving him, besides his sister, Mrs. Viola Sherren of Greenwood, are his wife, three daughters, seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Kosmosky, Grace (? - ? 1984)

Grace Kosmosky, 64, of Eau Claire recently died at an Eau Claire nursing home. Following services in Eau Claire, burial was made in the Neillsville City Cemetery.

The deceased (nee Grace Castner) was born in Loyal and married John Kosmosky on May 10, 1941. She worked at Eau Claire’s Luther Hospital for 17 years.

Survivors include her husband; three sons, Merlin of Chippewa Falls, Marvin of Guthrie, Kentucky, and Martin of Eau Claire; and seven daughters, Darlene Plemon of Lakeland, Minnesota, Shirley Biegel of Elko, Nevada, Judy Connor of Chippewa Falls, Linda Drehmel and Arlene Frank, both of Eau Claire, Goldean Kosmosky of Mahtomedi, Minnesota, and Cindy Kosmosky, Watertown, South Dakota. Joining them is a stepdaughter, Betty Jean Riley, Rochester, Minnesota; a brother, Harry Castner, Wild Rose; a sister, Hazel Roesler, Thorp, and 12 grandchildren.

Parker, Glen (? - ? 1984)

Funeral services were held in Montana for Glen Parker on the morning of December 10.

Parker, age 70, was born in the Town of Hewett to Hiram and Sadie (Walker) Parker. For the past 41 years he had been a resident of Conrad, Montana.

Surviving him are two brothers, James of Great falls, Montana, and LeRoy of Black River3 Falls; and five nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.

The burial was made in Conrad, Montana.

Sternitzky, Rudolph (21 January 1897 - 18 November 1984) With Flag

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, November 21, for Rudolph Sternitzky, 87, who died on Sunday, November 18, at Neillsville Memorial Home. The Rev. E.T. Keller officiated at Zion Lutheran Church in Granton.

Mrs. Roger Helm and the congregation offered music. Grandsons were pallbearers and burial was made in the church cemetery. The Gilbertson Funeral Home of Granton was in charge of arrangements.

Military honors were given at the graveside by the Neillsville American Legion post. Sternitzky was a veteran of World War I.

The deceased was born on January 21, 1897, in the Town of Lynn to Albert and Louise (Garbisch) Sternitzky. He attended rural and parochial schools. On September 16, 1925, he married Laura Reisner in Granton ceremonies. The couple farmed in the Town of Lynn.

Surviving him is a son, Warren, Granton; two daughters, Lorraine Novak of Granton and LaVonne Schmidt of Marshfield; a brother, Carl, Neillsville; 13 grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife (September 24 of this year); two sons, Forest and Leon; four brothers; and a grandson.

Tullis, Isabelle E. (1899? – 27 November 1984)

Word has been received of the death of Isabelle E. Tullis, 85, a former resident of the Town of Sherwood. Mrs. Tullis died on Tuesday, November 27, in Waukesha.

Mrs. Tullis was a Town of Sherwood resident from 1924 to 1963. She married William Tullis, who died in 1973.

Surviving her is a son, George, of Waukesha; and a daughter, Mrs. Harold (Doris) Hartenstein, also of Waukesha.

Funeral services were held in Waukesha on Friday, November 30. Burial was made in that city.

Youker, Ralph H. (3 November 1920 - 1 December 1984)

A former mechanic for several Neillsville garages, Ralph H. Youker, 64, died in Osseo Memorial Hospital on Saturday, December 1. He made his home at Rt. 2 Neillsville.

The deceased was born on November 3, 1920, in Sherburne, New York, to Paul and Irene (Hart) Youker. As a young boy, he moved with his parents to the Neillsville area and received his education in the Hewettville School. He then attended Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis and worked as a mechanic in the Twin Cities area. In 1954, he married Virginia Anderson in Neillsville ceremonies. Youker then worked at Horswill’s garage and later at Urban Motors for many years. He retired due to failing health.

Surviving him, besides his wife, are two sons, Gerald and Ralph, both of St. Paul; three stepsons, Harvey Sullivan and Paul Sullivan, both of St. Paul, and William Sullivan of Inner Grove Heights, Minnesota; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Sylvan (Kathy)  Perkins of St. Paul; two sisters, Irene and Vera; a brother, Bill of Minneapolis; and 17 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and a brother.

Funeral services were to be held today (Thursday, December 6) at 1:30 p.m. from the Gesche Funeral Home in Neillsville. Jerome Berger of the Jehovah’s Witnesses congregation was to officiate. Burial was to be made in the Columbia Cemetery, in the Town of Hewett. (The body was to lie in state at the Gesche Funeral Home on Wednesday evening from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. and again on Thursday morning until time of services.)
