Helstad, Geneva F. (29 July 1926 - 7 January 2015)
Geneva F. Helstad, 88, Hixton went to her eternal home Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2015,
at Black River Memorial Hospital, Black River Falls, while under the care of
Black River Memorial Hospice. She was born July 29, 1926, in Greenwood to Archie
and Rose (Schroeder) Marden.
Geneva was united in marriage to Orville Helstad, March 1, 1955, in Tucson, AZ.
She was a 1945 graduate of Black River Falls High School. Following high school,
Geneva attended Luther Hospital School of Nursing in Eau Claire and graduated in
1948. She pursued her nursing career in Eau Claire prior to moving to Hixton.
After moving to Hixton, Geneva worked at Black River Memorial Hospital for 31
years. Following her retirement, she worked part-time at Pigeon Falls Nursing
Home.
Geneva was actively involved in Squaw Creek Church groups, Christian Women’s
Club, Shady Glen Sewing Club and Hixton-Taylor American Legion Auxiliary. She
lived for her family and found lots of joy in her grandchildren.
Geneva is survived by her son, Michael (Gloria) Helstad of Hixton; daughter,
Sandy (Randy) Simpson of Durham, NC; grandchildren, Gina (Paul) Zastoupil of
Tomah, Nick (Lesley) Helstad of Hixton, and Connor, Garrett and Stephanie
Simpson of Durham, MC; great-grandchildren: Mikey and Rachel Zastoupil, Parker,
Jonathan and Levi Helstad; sisters: Delores ‘Dolly’ Hockmuth of Brodhead, and
Bonnie Dickie of Black River Falls; foster sister: Rose Klir of Mount H9oreb and
Mary (Clarence) Curtis of Dodgeville; brother-in-law, James Helstad of Eau
Claire; and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Orville; parents, Archie and Rose;
sister, Arlene; brothers: Raymond and Archie Marden Jr.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 10, 2015, at 11 a.m. at Squaw Creek
Lutheran Church, Black River Falls. Reverend Denise Anderson officiated. Burial
followed in the church cemetery. Family and friends were invited for visitation
Friday, Jan. 9, 2015, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., at Jensen-Modjeski Funeral Home,
Hixton, and also Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the
church.
