The Thorson family annual reunion was held the last Sunday in July, July 30, 1978, held at Stevens Point. About 90 members were present to enjoy a beautiful day visiting, eating and being entertained by music from members of the family.

From this area those attending were: Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Thorson, Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Alberts, Mr. and Mrs. Lusius Bowen, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Thorson, Minneapolis, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Mills and family, Mrs. John Lokken, Mr. and Mrs. Orville Thorson and Bess Thorson.

This was the 49th annual picnic, and special plans are under way for next year’s, which will be its 50th.

Preparations for the Potocnik Family Reunion began in January. On July 2, 1978, the weatherman was still thinking “January,” but the bad weather didn’t dampen the spirit of those in attendance at the reunion held at the Curtiss Community Hall. All those in attendance descended from the family of John Potocnik Sr. and Joseph Potocnik Sr. Both had come to this area in the early nineteen hundreds and had established farms northeast of Owen.

168 people gathered at noon for a potluck meal consisting of a tremendous variety and quantity of dishes. Some of the dishes were traditional fare, but among them could be seen Slovenian favorites such as potica (walnut bread), apple strudel, plus a dish made of sausage and sauerkraut flavored with caraway seed. The afternoon and evening were spent visiting, making new acquaintances and remembering old friends. Music for dancing was provided by Frank and Ethel Potocnik.

The plans for the reunion were the work of: Eddie and Bernice Potocnik Emil and Elsie Potocnik, Rudy and Hattie Potocnik, John and Margarete Potocnik, Jack and Alice Fritz, Anna Friedenfels, Tony Potocnik, Billie Potocnik, all of Owen; Maxine Potocnik, Withee; Frank and Ethel Potocnik, Curtiss; Anna Bozich, Milwaukee.

Red bouquets of garden flowers decorated the altar of St. Peters Lutheran Church in Dorchester for the marriage of Cheryl Reynolds, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Reynolds, Dorchester, to Timothy Reinke, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Peissig, Owen.

The Rev. Roland Golz officiated at the 6 p.m. ceremony Saturday, July 15, 1978, for which Kamela Tischendorf provided the organ music and Carla Tischendorf played the guitar. They sang two duets.

For her special day the bride wore a lace over satin gown with lace edged chapel train, lace bodice and sheer lace sleeves. The sheer nylon veil was attached to a crown covered with a beaded flower, and she carried a bouquet of red roses and white carnations.

Mrs. Cindy Christophersen, Withee, was matron of honor, and bridesmaid was Mrs. Gail Muehlbauer, Owen. They were sheer light blue nylon dresses with white lace apron and trim and matching hats. Their flowers were blue roses.

Attending the bridegroom were Ken Parnewicz, Withee, Best man, and Kevin Cleveland, owen, groomsman.. Performing ushering duties were Clark Reynolds, Dorchester, and Chris Christophersen, Withee.

A reception and dinner for 150 guests followed the ceremony and a dance was held in the evening.

The bride is a graduate of Colby High School, and her husband is an Owen-Withee High School graduate, employed at Weathershield Manufacturing, Medford.

The couple is marking their home at 428 West Broadway in Medford.

Marine Sergeant Danny J. Landis, son of Leroy E. and Lottie Landis of Route 2, Withee, has been promoted to his present rank while serving with 1st Force Service Support Group, Camp Pendleton, California.

He joined the Marine Corps in October 1975.

The Rev. Larry Leuthaeuser of Eau Claire performed the double ring ceremony which united Miss Valerie J. Burris, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Burris, Withee, and Mr. David Garnett of Eau Claire in marriage which was held at the Rod and Gun Club Park at Eau Claire on July 1, 1978 at 12:00 noon.

The bride chose for her wedding an ivory crepe street length dress with matching shawl and roses adorned her hair. Her bridal bouquet was made up of daisies, sweet peas, and carnations with baby’s breath.

Attending the bride as maid of honor was Pauline Spiegel, and bridesmaid was Kim Siverling. The maid of honor wore a street length dress in yellow with a flowered bodice, and the bridesmaid’s gown was in blue and white flowered. Their flowers were sweet peas, daisies, and carnations.

The groom, attired in a beige street suit, wore a rose boutonniere. The best man, Dale Frenzel and groomsman Chris Dinger both wore casual attire.

Steven Goodwin served as junior groomsman and Stacy Goodwin was the ring bearer. The flower girls were Ruth and Nicole Larson, nieces of the groom, who wore blue and pink sun dresses and carried baskets of mixed flowers.

At the reception which followed at the Rod and Gun Club, tables were decorated with bouquets of roses, and guests came from Medford, Sheboygan, Chicago, Jacksonville, Florida, Minneapolis, Rockford, Eau Claire, Chippewa Falls and Withee.

The bride is a graduate of Owen-Withee High School and a graduate of the University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire. She is a special education teacher.

The groom graduated from the Eau Claire High School and attended the Technical Institute of Eau Claire, where he is in private business.

The newlyweds make their home in Eau Claire.

All the animals were judged this year at Wagner’s Garage, due to the fact that the place used in past years, Weinberger’s Garage, now Rochester Silo Company, was not available. All dairy animals were first on the list for showing and judging.

The following were all First Place Blue Ribbon winners with their dairy animals: Renae Cook, Lori Bakke, Amy Horn, Jill Strassburger, Julie Slipek, Karen Ryba, Brian Ackerman, Jeff Fritz, and Monica Stieman.
