Green, Gladys D. (31 March 1919 - 11 February 2015)

Gladys D. Green, 95, of Eau Claire died Feb. 11, 2015. Gladys was born March 31, 1919, on her grandparents’ farm near Humbird, where she and her parents, Carl and Effie (Hardwick) Greub, lived her earliest years. Later, they spent additional years on other farms near Humbird. During her formative years she had many cousins and other friends that she enjoyed immensely.

She graduated from Humbird High School in 1937. While being bused to school at Humbird, she met the love of her life, Herb Green, who was her bus driver. They were married in June of 1937 shortly after her high school graduation. Together, they raised eight children. Gladys worked extremely hard maintaining the large family garden, canning and preserving vegetable and wild fruits, doing all the household chores, including baking ‘millions’ of loaves of bread, doing ‘mountains’ of laundry, cooking all the family meals, all while raising the eight children.

Gladys and Herb moved to Milwaukee during the WWII years when Herb worked in several defense factories, but they returned to Humbird shortly after the end of the war. In addition to helping Herb in all his endeavors, which included, a brief time farming, she was the bookkeeper and office manager at their business, the Humbird Feed Mill. Gladys was always the family hostess who ‘could feed an army on a moment’s notice’ and make it look easy and effortless.

In December of 1967, they moved to Eau Claire to be closer to Herb’s work. Gladys, whole sad leaving, made the move a positive change and they finished raising their family in Eau Claire. They became involved in house restorations and single-family rentals. Gladys also worked eight years at National Presto in the late 1960s and early 1970s. During their Eau Claire years, they were longtime members of Plymouth Congregational UCC. Gladys was very proud of her family and her family if forever grateful for the lifetime of loving and nourishing care she provided to them.

Gladys was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Herb. She is survived by her eight children: Robert (Clarey), Alvin, Kenneth (Mary Ann), Sharan (Joe Dwyer), Alice (Ed Noyes) Ralph (Fe), Glen (Lena), Jeffery (Lesa); her sister, Esther Ziegler; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life service was held Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2015, at 1 p.m. at Fuller-Speckien-Hulke Funeral Home at 3209 Rudolph Road, Eau Claire, with visitation from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Pastor David Huber of Plymouth UCC officiated. Committal services took place at 3 p.m., Tuesday afternoon in the Town of Mentor Cemetery at Humbird.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks any memorial donations be directed to Plymouth UCC, 2010 Moholt Drive, Eau Claire, WI 54703, or Feed My People Food Bank at 2610 Alpine Road, Eau Claire, WI 54703.
