Alger, Wilma Frances (Billie) (21 May 1923 - 20 February 2015)
Wilma F. ‘Billie’ Alger, age 91, of Thorp, passed away on Friday, February 20,
2015, at Our Lady of Victory Hospital in Stanley. Funeral services were held at
11 a.m. on Tuesday February 24, 2015, at Thorp Funeral Home, with Rev. John
Sindler officiating. Burial followed in East Thorp Cemetery. Pallbearers were
Todd Alger, Jacob Alger, Dennis Alger, Neil Alger, Jim Gulcynski, and Ryan
Zurakowski. Visitation was held at Thorp Funeral Home on Tuesday from 10 a.m.
until time of service.
Wilma Frances Bradle was born on May 21, 1923, in the Town of Reseburg, rural
Thorp, the daughter of Frank and Katherine (Hickman) Bradle. She was raised on
the family farm and received her education in the Town of Reseburg, graduating
from Thorp High School in 1941. After completing her education, Wilma worked at
Blue Moon Cheese Factory in Thorp. She was united in marriage to Gilbert Alger
at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, in Thorp, on September 10, 1946. In addition to
being a homemaker and farmwife, Wilma also worked at Cliff’s Cleaners and did
housecleaning for families in the Thorp area. After retiring, they moved into
Thorp and purchased a home at 302 Wall Street, where she resided until entering
Oakbrook Health & Rehab.
She had many interests, but especially enjoyed watching TV, reading, playing
solitaire, taking care of her yard, quilting, making rugs, and sewing.
She is survived by two sons: Larry Alger of Eau Claire, and Allen (Joyce) Alger
of Thorp; three grandsons: Todd, Jacob and Dennis Alger; two
great-granddaughters; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Wilma was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Gilbert, on December
21, 1991; a daughter-in-law, Linda C. Alger on November 8, 2004; one grandson,
Jay G. Alger, on August 31, 2007; and two sisters: Ruth Brunett and Edith
Godden.
