Thompson, T. Barney (20 JAN 1876 – 7 SEP 1967)
T. Barney Thompson, 91, Rockford, Ill., died Thursday, Sept. 7, 1967 at Rockford
Memorial Hospital, Ill. He became ill, apparently of a heart attack, in his
office on Aug. 29.
Funeral services were held Saturday at the Burpee-Wood Funeral Home with Dr.
Joseph C. Cleveland, pastor of the Second Congregational Church, officiating.
Burial was made in Cedar Bluff Cemetery.
Mr. and Mrs. M.C. Thompson of Abbotsford, accompanied by Mrs. Olin Thompson of
Portage, attended the funeral.
Mr. Thompson was born Jan. 20, 1876 in Nashotah, Wis. His early years were spent
on a farm in the town of Holton and later in Abbotsford, where he attended grade
school. He was the oldest of four sons, Carl now of Rockford, Ill., Louis in
Seattle, Wash., and Otto in Texas.
He was a railroad telegrapher at the age of 14.
He attended Beloit College and was graduated magna cum laude in 1903. He became
a Congregational minister, but left that for the newspaper field to become
editor of the Rockford Daily Republic in 1914. In 1958 he became editor
emeritus.
His "Column Left: was a daily feature in the Register Republic since 1922, with
the last one printed August 30.
His wife, the former Annie Teal, preceded him in death in 1957.
Besides three brothers, he has two daughters.
