Bohnhoff, Fred C. (3 APR 1874 – 31 JUL 1918)

[Note: not a separate obituary article; extracted from the August 8, 1918 Columbia news]

This community was sadly shocked last week to learn of the death of Fred C. Bohnhoff at the Marshfield Hospital Wednesday morning, July 31st. He had been ailing for some time and had been taken to the hospital the week previous for an operation for a tumor at the base of his brain. However, he passed away before he could be operated on.

He was born in Germany, April 3rd, 1874, and came to this country with his parents in his early youth. For many years he has been a loved and respected citizen of this place, whose genial face will be sadly missed. He has been a most faithful and conscientious mail carrier on Route 1 ever since the route was started. He was united in marriage to Viola Barnes on Sept. 10, 1908, and to this union were born four children, as follows: Amanda, Edna, Wilson, and a baby boy who passed to the great beyond a little over a year ago. Mr. Bohnhoff is survived by his wife, three children, an aged father and mother, four brothers and five sisters. The four brothers and one sister were here to attend the funeral, which was held Friday afternoon from the church. Short services were held at the house also. Interment was made in the Columbia Cemetery, Rev. Brandt of Neillsville officiating.

The deceased was a member of the local Woodman Lodge and had served his lodge in different capacities from time to time. The pall bearers, who were chosen from the local lodge, were as follows: Peter Larson, Leo Moravec, Herman Rotleff, Frank Lockman, John Sollberger, Jr., and Fred Mosher, Jr. The funeral was largely attended, which showed the deep love and respect he was held in. The sorrowing widow and little ones as well as the other members of the family have the sincere sympathy of all in this, their deep bereavement.
