Dodte, Carl (Gored by Bull – 23 Aug 1918)
On Friday afternoon Carl Dodte was badly gored by a bull and narrowly escaped
being killed. Mr. Dodte was cutting some wood in a pasture on his farm northeast
of town and being a trifle deaf, did not hear the approach of the bull, which
was a young animal and not known to be vicious. The bull charged Mr. Dodte from
the rear, cAught him on his horns, and carried him twenty feet away. Mr. Dodte
lost consciousness at the moment the bull struck him and remained so for a
considerable length of time. When he regained consciousness the bull stood a
short distance away, calmly watching his victim. Mr. Dodte managed to get to his
feet and got to the house without any interference by the bull, which seemed
satisfied with the injuries he had already inflicted. A doctor was summoned and
it was found that Mr. Dodte had suffered a broken collar bone and three broken
ribs. It is also possible that he has received internal injuries, as he is still
in a very serious condition.
