Fountain, Caesar (1861 – 19 APR 1921)
(Entire community shocked by death of well known man, who expired while engaged
in his duties as janitor of school – one of the school teachers entered basement
of building, and thinking he was asleep, attempted to awake him. Only to make
sad discovery that his spirit had taken it upward flight – deceased leaves a
legion of friends who mourn his sudden death – funeral services to he held
Friday morning)
Caesar Fountain, who had been janitor at the Wardwell school for the past two
years, and who was well known to almost everyone in the county, and loved by all
the children, died suddenly Tuesday afternoon shortly after 2:30, as he rang the
recess bell at that time, but did not return to ring the bell at 2:45. One of
the teachers, having some flowers to throw away, took them to the basement to
have them burned, where she found Mr. Fountain sitting in a chair, with his hand
on the bench by his side, in which he held his pipe. Calling him and receiving
no answer, she shook him, and was horrified to find him dead. The school was
dismissed and the news spread over town like wildfire, as this was the third
death within five days of heart failure.
Caesar Fountain was born in St. John Canada in 1861, and came to the United
States when seven years old. He came to Idaho twenty years ago, and to Emmett
five years ago. He had followed lumber up to the past two years. He was married
when young, and had one son, but both wife and child died several years ago. He
leaves on brother and one sister, residing in Wisconsin, and one sister, Mrs.
Hanneberry, formerly of Emmett, but now living in Baker City, Oregon, who
arrived Thursday morning.
Funeral services will be held Friday morning at 10 o’clock from the Catholic
Church, Father Dwyer officiating. The Emmett schools will be dismissed for the
day and each class will appoint four members to act with teachers as escorts of
the body. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery.
Note: Ceasar Fountain is the brother of
Dena (Fountain/LaFountain) LeClaire, whose obituary is on the website
