Humbird (Historical Society - 13 September 1973)

At the regular meeting of the Clark County Historical Society in Humbird, last Thursday evening, society members were informed that the Green Thumb workers had returned for the first time since early spring to society projects.

Mrs. Alice Gearing gave an account of the early history of Humbird with its beginnings as a Swiss Colony. She had several scrapbooks with clippings of the area which she discussed with members during the lunch hour. Mrs. Gearing has worked with preparations for the centennial in 1969 and had also written a skit presented at a program closing the Humbird Public School this spring.

During the business meeting the recent meeting of the board was reviewed.

Among those attending were: Mayor Skidmore, who presented the general idea of city park plans. It was voted for a go-ahead to get more details from the other parties involved. Phil Rasmussen, FFA advisor with three members were also present to learn more about the projects planned by the society. They will be working some of the clean-up.

The parcel of land previously discussed has been sold and the income applied on the mortgage. The final papers were signed that evening.

Members were reminded of the plans for a dinner in the northeastern part of the county this fall. The next meeting will be held October 4, in the Longwood town hall.
