Mauel, Mr./Mrs. Henry B. (Gold – 20 MAR 1966)

Hundreds of friends and relatives joined with Mr. and Mrs. H.B. Mauel Sr. Sunday in observance of their 50th Wedding Anniversary.

They were joined in an anniversary Mass at 11 o’clock at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, with Fr. H.L. Crubel being the celebrant. Three of the grandsons, Peter, Bill and Thomas Mauel, assisted as altar boys. The honored couple wore yellow rose corsage and were preceded in the Mass Procession by a wedding party, Linda and Tom Mauel were dressed as a bride and groom, followed by flower girls and escorts. The girls wore gold tulle headpieces centered by daisies, and they carried a stem of gladiolas.

At the end of the service 224 dinner guests were seated in the parish dining hall to a meal served by the ladies of the Holy Rosary Church.

From two to four o’clock the couple received an additional 400 friends and well-wishers at an “open house” held in the Holy Rosary parish hall.

During the church service Fr. Crubel told all by revealing that Henry Mauel is 75 years of age and Mrs. Mauel 71. In recalling the background of this fine couple who have made their home in Owen (Clark Co., Wis.) for 46 years and contributed greatly to the wealth of the community by their participation in civic and spiritual promotions, he pointed out that they were both born and raised at Ashford, Wis., Fond du Lac County.

The two attended St. Martin’s Parochial School and were members of St. Martin’s Parish, where they received all of the sacraments.

Mrs. Mauel (Nora) was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Berg who operated a fine farm in the Ashford area. Henry was the son Mr. and Mrs. J. William Mauel who owned and operated a cheese and butter factory.

In 1914 he attended a short course in the Dairy School at the University of Wisconsin at Madison.

Shortly after the couple’s marriage on March 6, 1916 they moved to Colby, where they built and operated a cheese factory for four years. They then sold the business and moved to Owen, purchasing a cheese factory that used to be located at the intersection of County Trunk D. and Fifth Street and soon thereafter began to manufacture ice cream in addition to the cheese production. To the present day this fine quality ice cream goes under the trade name Sunshine Ice Cream.

Both Mr. and Mrs. Mauel have been pillars in the growth of the Catholic Church in this area. They were instrumental in bringing a parish to Owen, contributing generously in time and money to the construction of the first church, now serving as the American Legion Hall, and later in the present day facilities.

Mrs. Mauel served as first president of the Altar Society when the new parish was build. In addition to her church affiliations she is active the Grey Ladies, Red Cross worker and enjoys her bridge club.

Henry has been active in business circles of the city during these many years, is an active member in the Holy Name Society, Knights of Columbus and the Catholic Foresters. Fortunately both of them are enjoying good health which enables Henry to pursue his hobbies of fishing, hunting and playing cards.

Mr. and Mrs. Mauel were blessed with 6 children, Eleanora, who resides in Owen, Mrs. Glenn Shreve, who passed away March 18, 1965, Alice, a nurse in Wausau, Mrs. Edward (Irene) Lehnen, Owen; Mrs. Marvin (Rosalie) Koenig, West Bend; and Henry Mauel Jr., Owen.
