St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, Thorp, was the scene at 3:30 pm. Saturday
afternoon, August 5, 1978, for the wedding which united Audrey Baehr, Withee,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Baehr, Withee, and Tom Smith, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Lee Haines Jr., Withee, in a ceremony performed by Father John Puerner.
Louise Luedke sang “Sunrise, Sunset,” “Wedding Song,” and “Ode To Joy,”
accompanied by Dorothy Rabska on the organ.
The bride wore a white gown with train, with chiffon sleeves and lace in the
front. She wore a white hat with ribbon accenting it, carried a bouquet of
white, blue and yellow roses, and gardenias.
Ann Swatzina, Thorp, was maid of honor, and bridesmaids were Cheryl Sarafin,
both friends of the bride. They wore long blue dresses with ivory lace sleeves
and lacy front bodice. Each carried a bouquet of blue, yellow and white
gardenias.
Attending the groom was Calvin Baehr, brother of the bride, and David Bjorge,
cousin of the groom.
A reception for 200 guests was held at the Quonset Hall.
The bride, a dental assistant, attended Thorp High School and Lakeshore
Technical Institute for Dental Assistance. The groom attended Owen-Withee High
School and is employed as a meat cutter. After a wedding trip to Minnesota Como
Park, they will be at home at Stevens Point.
Guests were from Hillside, Illinois, Norris, Illinois, California, Sheboygan,
Rosemont, Fond du Lac, Hebron, Illinois, Lake Geneva and Texas.

Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Smith, who were married the day after the 60th Wedding
Anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Haines of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, were honored
to have their presence at the wedding.

The Waushara County Court House in Wautoma, Wisconsin, was the scene Saturday
morning, July 29, 1978, of the wedding ceremony which united Carolyn S. Hynes of
408 S. 6th Street, La Crosse in marriage with Gordon T. Ovans, RR 1, Red
Granite, Wisconsin. Judge James Poole of Wautoma officiated for the ceremony.
The bride, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph E. Hynes, Withee, wore a crème crepe
gown with a crème colored rose in her hair. She wore a corsage of burgundy
roses, and carried crème roses with burgundy stephanotis. Her sister, Virginia
Hynes, was her attendant, and wore an ice blue floral gown and carried blue
daisies.
The groom, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roderick G. Ovans of Appleton wore a light tan
denim suit with a crème shirt, and his best man, Richard Ovans from Green Bay
wore a light tan denim suit with an ice blue shirt.
A dinner and reception were held at the Quinn’s Inn, Red Granite, Wisconsin,
with over fifty guests from Boulder City, Nevada, Lisle, Illinois, Appleton,
Milwaukee, Green Bay, Oshkosh, Stratford, River Falls, Withee Arkansaw,
Minocqua, and La Crosse, Wisconsin.
The bride is a 1971 graduate of Owen-Withee High School, and Shirlee’s Institute
of Cosmetology, Eau Claire, and attended last year, Viterbo College in La
Crosse. She is Managing Cosmetologist at Irene’s Beauty Salon in Owen, and this
past year at Spurgeon’s In La Crosse. She will be employed at Elaine’s Beauty
Salon in Wautoma.
The groom is a 1966 graduate of Appleton West High School, UW-Stout in 1971, and
Fox Valley Tech, 1974. He is employed as a foreman at McQuay-Perfex Berlin
Plants, Berlin, Wisconsin. He is a member of Berlin Jaycee’s.
The couple plans to make their home at Route 1, Red Granite, Wisconsin.

Garland strings of roses and gladiolas arrangements decorated St. John’s
Lutheran Church in Withee during an evening ceremony that united Elaine Marie
Rohland and Dennis Robert Liepke in marriage on Friday, August 11, 1978. The
7:30 ceremony was performed by the Rev. Douglas Groenewold, pastor, with guests
seated by Richard and Dave Rohland, Dennis Woik and Larry Herington, ushers.
The bride, a resident of Abbotsford, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edmond
Rohland of rural Withee, and the groom also of Abbotsford, is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Raymond Liepke.
For the occasion the bride wore a champagne crepe bridal gown made by her
mother, with lace insets at the neck and around long sleeves, a hat of ivory
with lace and seed pearls, and a sheer streamer that hung down the back. She
carried a bouquet of six long stem red roses.
The bride was attended by Miss Patricia Rohland, the maid of honor, Mrs. Lou Ann
Mellenthin, Mrs. Patricia Liepke and Miss Laurie Winch. They wore peach Giana
long gowns with self-belt and open cape sleeves, and each wore a hand carved
ivory necklace. The bridesmaids carried sing long stem white roses with blue
ribbons.
The groom was dressed in a sandalwood tux with dark brown trim and a red rose
boutonniere.
The groom’s attendants were Greg Smith, best man, Michael Rohland, Douglas
Liepke, and Duane Woik. They wore sandalwood tux coats with dark brown vests and
trousers, and white boutonnieres.
Following the ceremony there was a buffet and dance at the Sword in Colby,
decorated with garland strings of rose bud vases on the table. The gladiola
arrangements for the altar in the church were grown by the sister of the bride,
Mrs. Gerald Rakover.
Guests from out of town were from Colorado, Alaska, Texas, California, Michigan,
Minnesota, Milwaukee, Stevens Point, Wausau, Marshfield, Superior and Racine.
The bride is a graduate of Owen-Withee High School, and a graduate of Medical
Assistant from Mid-State Technical School, Marshfield. She is currently employed
as a Medical Assistant at the Marshfield Clinic. She is a member of the Leader
Tops Club in Colby.
The groom is also a graduate of Owen-Withee High School and has completed one
year at Holy Cross Jr. College, and one year pre-dental at Marquette University
in Milwaukee. He is currently the Owner-Manager of Blue Chip Elevator in
Abbotsford. Photography is his hobby.
The couple journeyed to Las Vegas and, Mackinac Island for their honeymoon, and
will make their home in Abbotsford.

Mr. and Mrs. Otto Becker, who will have been married 50 years on September 5,
1978, were honored Saturday, August 26, 1978 with a Golden Wedding Anniversary
Celebration held at the Meadowview Country Club, Owen.
Over 150 relatives and friends attended the anniversary celebration, which
included a dinner in the afternoon, and then an “Open House” at the Club from 8
to 12 p.m. The Emil Dallenbach Band provided music for dancing and listening
during the evening.

This Sunday, September 3, 1978, many past and present residents of the Redville
community will gather at the Greenwood Park for their Third Annual Redville
Community Reunion and picnic.
According to members of the committee organizing this year’s reunion, all
Redville people young and old, past and present, are invited to come early and
stay late. A potluck dinner will be served between 12 and 1 p.m.
Last year of 130 people attended the second annual reunion at the Mr. and Mrs.
Ray Purgett farm, and the organizers are expect even more this year.
The Village of Redville, north of Owen on the Clark and Taylor County line, once
was a thriving community with a cheese factory, saw mill, later a box factory,
and a number of houses, along with the Redville Store.

St. Paul’s Lutheran Church at Curtiss, the little brick church one half mile
west of Curtiss, which has known only quiet and emptiness for nearly twenty-five
years, resounded with song and verse on Sunday, August 20, 1978 when members and
friends gathered there for worship services. Conducting the service was the Rev.
Alan Mishall. A picnic was held at noon on the church grounds following the
service. About 185 people were in attendance with Magne Ivar Mellom, a relative
of Mr. and Mrs. Ken Olson of Neillsville, and Wayne Olson who is visiting the
area from Fliso, Norway. Others came from Fairfield, California, Minneapolis,
Charlotte, N.C., Mesa, Arizona, Boston, Crown Point, Indiana, Neillsville,
Sparta, Pittsville, Abbotsford, Athens, Phillips and Berwyn, Illinois.

Vernon G. Turner, age 58, was dead upon arrival at St. Joseph’s Hospital in
Marshfield at 9:18 p.m., Friday, August 25, 1978, after suffering an apparent
heart attack.
Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, August 29, 1978 at
the Owen Alliance Church, with Pastor Harry Landaw, pastor, officiating. Burial
followed at Riverside Cemetery.
Mr. Turner was born on April 20, 1920 in Watertown, Wisconsin, and later moved
to Neillsville, where he attended area school. He married Joyce Capes on
December 11, 1946 in Owen, and they farmed in the Greenwood, Owen, Colby and
Longwood areas, and he also worked for the Longwood Feed Mill.
Although not an official member, Mr. Turner and his family made the Owen
Alliance Church their church home.
The vocalist was Marilyn Hagen who sand “How Great Thou Art,” and “In the Arms
of Jesus,” and organist was Mrs. Arnold Awe.
Pallbearers were Bernard Anderson and William Turner.
He is survived by his wife; one daughter, Mrs. Frank (Betty) Sipusich of
Milwaukee; four sons, Glen of Madison, Dick and Larry of West Bend, and Rickey,
living at home and attending O-W Junior High School; one sister, Mrs. Vivian
Kopnick of Dubuque, Iowa; and seven grandchildren.
The Maurina Funeral Home in Owen was in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Clarence A. Olson, age 67, of Route 1, Owen, died at St. Joseph’s Hospital,
Marshfield on Monday, August 28, 1978 at 4:23 p.m.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, August 31, 1978 at 10:30 a.m. at the
Maurina Funeral Home in Owen, with Father Louis Dietrick officiating. Burial
will following at the Hope Catholic Cemetery in Chippewa Falls.
The body will lie in state at the Maurina Funeral Home after 4:00 p.m. on
Wednesday, August 30.
Clarence Olson was born on February 7, 1911 in Cadott, Wisconsin. On January 11,
1934 he married Elizabeth Thompson at Chippewa Falls. They lived at Chippewa
Falls from 1934 to 1950, where he worked for Chippewa Woolen Mills. In 1950 they
moved to a farm in the Township of Longwood, and then in the Township fo Green
Grove in 1958, where he has lived for 20 years.
He is survived by four sons, James of Minneapolis, Richard of Chippewa Falls,
David and Daniel of Owen; three daughters, Mrs. Lester (Connie) Maki of Chippewa
Falls, Mrs. Joseph (Karen) Koltis of Thorp, and Miss Alane Marie Olson living at
home; two brothers, Otto and Elmer Olson of Chippewa Falls; one sister, Mrs.
Oscar (Ellen) Books of Eau Claire; and five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Clarence Jr. and Robert; five brothers and
one sister.
