Kuss, Carl M. (20 DEC 1911 – 28 JUN 1966)
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church at
West Bend for Carl M. Kuss, 54, athletic director and teacher at West Bend High
School, who died Tuesday at St. Joseph's Hospital of cancer.
In addition to his high school coaching, Kuss was director of the northern
division of the Land o' Lakes Baseball league for the last 11 years.
Kuss first came to West Bend in 1941, but left shortly thereafter for service in
the field artillery in World War II. He served 25 months overseas in Iceland and
the Pacific theater. After the war, Kuss did graduate work at the University of
Minnesota and then returned to West Bend as coach and biology teacher in 1946.
He became athletic director in 1957.
Born at Prescott Dec. 20, 1911, Kuss attended River Falls High School and River
Fall State University, where he earned nine athletic letters, in addition to
making the scholastic honor roll. After graduation from River Falls in 1935,
Kuss went to Owen (Clark Co., Wis.) as teacher and coach for five years.
Survivors are, the widow, Ida; a daughter, Karla; two sons, Terry and Michael;
two sisters, Mrs. Alfred Meier of Prescott and Mrs. Esther Doffing of
Litchfield, Minn.; and three brothers, Ferdinand of Citrus Heights, Calif.;
Herman of River Falls, and Arnold of St. Paul, Minn.
