For heroism in combat, Army Specialist Four Robert C. Staszcuk, 20, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Casimir J. Staszcuk, and grandson of Mrs. John Staszcuk of Gilman,
received the Army Commendation Medal in ceremonies near Pleiku, Vietnam.
Spec. Staszcuk earned the award for actions last May 18 while serving as a
machine gunner on a search and destroy operation along the Cambodian border.
The Company's lead platoon made contact with the large North Vietnamese force.
As the other platoons attempted to join the lead platoo, contact was made with
another enemy force.
Spec. Staszcuk ran to the company's new perimeter and started placing effective
fire into the advancing enemy. Noticing several wounded men lying exposed to
enemy fire, he maneuvered closer to their position and place heavy cover fire.
This action allowed the men to reach the safety of the perimeter.
Spec. Staszcuk is a clerk in Company B, 1st Battalion of the 4th Infantry
Division's 8th Infantry, near Pleiku.
