Loyal Firemen were summoned to a barn fire on the Eugene Pipkorn farm
approximately 10 miles northeast of Loyal on Sunday. The fire was noticed by a
neighbor, Merlin Zimmerman, at Midnight and reported.
According to the Loyal Fire Department the fire could have been caused by
spontaneous combustion or lightning is possible, as it was raining when the fire
department was summoned.
Fifteen head of young stock were lost in the blaze. Weyhmiller said the barn
roof and walls had been ablaze by the time the fire department reached the farm.
The hayloft was filled with chopped hay. When the hay collapsed into the lower
portion of the barn, some of the cattle were trapped. The 30 head of dairy cows
were not in the barn at the time of the fire.
A machine shed close to the barn was also demolished by the blaze. It had housed
two tractors, a fanning mill and a large quantity of lumber.
Laura Pipkorn said she was at the Wausau Fair when the fire started. Her father
was away on vacation in the western states when the incident took place.
Fire fighters stayed at the scene until 6 a.m. They guarded the house and other
farm buildings from the blaze.
The dairy cattle are being house at the Harley Witt farm until Mr. Pipkorn
returns from out West.

In his report to the City Council last week Tuesday, Greenwood Public Works
Director Gene Sowieja read a letter from the Department of Transportation. In
that letter the department told the city that Rustic Lane must be upgraded to
state specifications before it can be incorporated in the city street map for
highway aid. The aid, lost if the street is not upgraded, could amount to
approximately $1,000. The Council moved to meet the specifications.
Sowieja told the Council that the latter basically was relating to the radius
where the street meets the landfill. Some culvert work must also be done. The
Department of Transportation has set a deadline of October 1, 1979 for the work
to be completed.
