Gaffney, Mary (3 JAN 1897 – 27 JUL 1968)
Mary Gaffney, 71, of Stanley, died suddenly Saturday morning at her home.
She was born in Hecla, S.D. on Jan. 3, 1897. She graduated from the Hecla High
School in 1915 and Cark College in Dubuque, Iowa, in 1921. She taught school in
Tyndall, S.D., for two years. On Aug. 21, 1923 she married Arthur Gaffney. They
resided in Minneapolis for one year before coming to Stanley.
Mrs. Gaffney was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church; St. Theresa's Circle.
Catholic Women's Club, o which she was past president; and the Victory Memorial
Gray Ladies.
Survivors are her husband; five sons, Joseph, Sun Prairie; William, Delmont,
Pa.; Robert, DeForest, Wis.; Arthur, Waukesha; and Michael, Sun Prairie; one
daughter, Mrs. Mylon Sinclair, Appleton; 29 grandchildren; and six brothers,
Nicholas J. Stehly, Anaheim, Calif.; Michael and Ted, Hecla, S.D; Dr. Frank
Stehly, Elgin, Neb.; Joseph Stehly, Nueva, Calif., and Dr. Charles Stehly, Los
Angeles, Calif.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday from St. Mary's Catholic Church,
with the Rev. Donald Berg officiating. Burial was in St. Mary's Catholic
Cemetery.
