Verhalen, Edith N. (8 JUL 1917 – 14 JUL 2015)
Edith N. Verhalen, 98, Loyal, passed away on Tuesday, July 14, 2015, at Hilltop
Assisted Living-Alpine Terrace, Wisconsin Rapids. Funeral services were held at
11 a.m., on Friday, July 17, at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Loyal. Rev. Steve
Brice officiated. Burial followed in the Loyal Cemetery. Music was performed by
Cherilyn Jakobi, organist, and Edith's great-granddaughter, Megan Schauer,
soloist. Pallbearers were Daniel Verhalen, Todd Barten, Robert Schauer, Charles
Butterbrodt, Dennis Rogstad, Terry Rogstad, Gary Verhalen and James Verhalen.
Edith Nancy Young was born on July 8, 1917 in Loyal, the daughter of Bert and
Celia (nee Clouse) Young. She was raised and received her education in Loyal,
graduating from Loyal High School in 1934. Edith married Edgar C. Verhalen on
Nov. 20, 1937, in Milwaukee. She farmed with her husband in the Loyal area from
1938 to 1968. Edith worked as a cook for the Loyal Public Schools for five
years, and also worked in the deli at the Loyal Grocery Store. Her husband,
Edgar, died on Feb. 4, 1991. She resided in Loyal until moving to Wisconsin
Rapids in 2012 to be near her daughter, Bonnie. Edith was a member of St.
Anthony Catholic Church and a member of the Clark County Homemakers since 1948.
She had many interests, including cooking, baking, and playing cards, especially
sheepshead. She stayed very connected with family throughout her life, and
always put the needs and wishes of others ahead of her own. Her kindness, caring
love and wit touched everyone she knew or met.
She is survived by one son, Kenneth (Shirley) Verhalen, Waupaca; one daughter,
Bonnie (George "Bud") Barten, Wisconsin Rapids; four grandchildren, Daniel
(Lori) Verhalen, Tania Verhalen, Todd (Denise) Barten, and Lynette (Rob) Schauer;
nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Luella Butterbrodt, Loyal, and Hazel
Rogstad, Loyal; one brother, Calvin Young, Tucson, Ariz.; and nieces, nephews,
other relatives and friends.
Edith was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Edgar; one sister,
Norma Kuehling; and one half-brother, Harold Young.
