Mertens, Albert A. (29 JUN 1907 – 22 AUG 1968)
Albert A. Mertens, 61, route 1, Dorchester, died Thursday, Aug. 22 at the Bethel
Convalescent Home at Arpin. He had been in ill health the past two months.
The Rev. Gerald Schuh officiated at services Monday at St. Louis Catholic Church
at Dorchester. Burial was made in the Dorchester Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Clifford Herman, Jerome Kronschnable, Max Kronschnable, Milton
Kronschnable, Steve Mertens and Earl Salter.
Rosary services were conducted by members of the parish and Knights of Columbus
Sunday evening at the Maurina Funeral Home.
Mr. Mertens was born at Dorchester June 29, 1907, and he received his education
in Dorchester schools.
On June 12, 1929, he was married at St. Leo's Catholic Church, Milwaukee, to the
former Sylvia Tennessen, who survives him. The couple lived in Milwaukee, where
he was employed by the Milwaukee Transport Company until 1944, when they came to
Dorchester.
Mr. Mertens operated a trucking company and garage with his brother, the late
John Mertens. In 1952, he purchased his brother's interest in the business and
started a Plymouth-Chrysler automobile dealership. In 1966 he moved the
dealership to Medford, although still operating a garage and automobile body
repair shop.
He served as village president from 1949 to 1851. He was also a member of St.
Louis Catholic Church and the Colby Knights of Columbus.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Henry of Marshfield,
Dennis of Dorchester, and Lloyd, recently discharge from the air force; and 11
grandchildren.
His mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Mertens, Dorchester, also survives, and there are
four sisters and four brothers, Mrs. Clara Sailer of Owen, Mrs. Pearl Schoelz
and Mrs. Marie Schindler, Milwaukee, Mrs. Madge Rhyner of Dorchester, Alfred
Mertens of Jefferson, Carl Mertens of Dorchester, George Mertens of Waukesha,
and Lawrence Mertens, living in Illinois.
