Jonkel Brothers (“Far-Apart” Land-Wise - 1974)

After returning home from a visit with their mother, Mrs. Tom Yndogliato of Rt. 3 Neillsville, Dr. Charles Jonkel headed north for the edge of the Arctic Circle to tend to his duties of observing the polar bear while his brother, George Jonkel of Laurel, Md., headed south for the Antarctic to tend to his duties of observing the bird life there.

George Jonkel left Providence, R. I., January 4 and will be in the New Zealand area until January 20. From there, he will go to McMurdo station until January 26, then on to the icebreaker Staten Island until February 5 before returning to McMurdo station until the ninth. He will be in Christchurch, New Zealand, until February 12 when he will leave to return home, expecting to arrive in Laurel February 15.

Both the Jonkels attended school at the Sunny Nook School at Columbia and Neillsville High School.

Dr. Charles Jonkel is employed by the Canadian wild life service. His brother is employed by the United States wild life service.
