Hart, George (Arrested– 3 Nov 1918)
On Sunday a couple of hounds chased a buck deer into the barnyard of Frank
Rotleff, living west of Columbia on the Humbird Road. The dogs cornered the deer
in the yard and Rotleff was unable to drive them away from their quarry and
seeing also that the deer had been wounded by a rifle shot and would soon die,
he shot the animal. Rotleff then called up Ben Lanning, game warden at Black
River Falls, and Lanning was on the scene within a couple hours. As a result of
his investigation Geo. Hart, Sr., and Geo. Hart, Jr., were arrested, charged
with being the owners of the offending hounds and being responsible for their
chasing this particular deer. The two were brought to town Monday and their
hearing will be held on Wednesday.
