The death of Edward Joyce was a sad blow to many friends throughout these parts and aside from his home friends no one will miss him and hold him in memory any more than us boys at Ranch 1. We knew him from the time he was a mere boy to the time he went across the water to help protect our flag. Many times he looked us up when he was in Neillsville with his father’s team that we might ride home and have our luggage brought home to our door. He was a boy with good intentions. He was manly with an angel heart that beat not for himself alone, but for his friends as well, and the letter to his parents from the nurse that attended him is not only evidence that he was dearly loved by his home friends and associates, but during the last few hours in this life he also had loving thoughts of a dear old mother and father, two sisters and a brother, who in their sorrow have our deepest sympathy, but we all have the assurance that God don’t call on our friends until He has a place for them, and if in our daily routine we would stop and think and see things as God sees them, we no doubt would be happy in knowing that those dear friends were the most worthy of taking the lead and had merely gone on a little way and are waiting to meet us again.

Wm. Thoma and Dave Ross have been getting the roads throughout the country in fine shape for shale the coming winter.

Willis and Lisle Armitage and a few others have gone north to catch the buckfluenza, a common malady with the deer hunters this fall. Until one hunts deer several seasons it is not necessary to have any rear sights on their gun. The first seven hundred deer the writer shot, in his mind, he always got a whole hat full of bark or dead leaves from a stub or tree, 16 or 20 feet above the deer.
