Karlen, Ervin J. (23 SEP 1927 - 17 SEP 2015)
Ervin J. Karlen, 87, Edgar, died Thursday, September 17 at Aspirus Wausau
Hospital.
Ervin was born on September 23, 1927, in the Township of Reitbrock, the son of
the late Nicholas and Rose Karlen. He married Gertrude 'Nancy' Dahlke on June 6,
1959 at St. John's the Baptist Catholic Church, Edgar.
Ervin worked on the farm and in construction with his father. In 1951, he was
drafted into the army and served at Bamberg Germany until July 1953. Upon
returning he was employed by Joe Burger Construction until 1960. In 1961, Ervin
started his own construction business where he built and renovated numerous
barns, pole sheds and homes.
In 1997, Ervin 'retired' his business, but continued to work for his son until
he was 75. Ervin enjoyed working in his yard cutting lawn and helping Gertrude
with the flowers and garden. During the holidays, Ervin and Gertrude were known
for decorating their house with so many lights you could see it for miles. They
enjoyed traveling, listening to country music and playing sheepshead.
Ervin is survived by his wife Gertrude and their three children: Pat Karlen,
Nancy Karlen, and Brian (Jenese) Karlen, all residing in Marathon; three
grandchildren: April, Breanne, and Bailey and three great grandchildren: Tucker,
Noah, and Aiden. Also surviving is his sister Sylvia Nowacki, Milwaukee.
Preceding him in death are his brother Nicholas Karlen, two sisters, Lucille
Hager and Margaret Karlen and his daughter-in-law Becky Karlen.
The funeral Mass will be celebrated 11:00 a.m. Monday, September 21, 2015 at
Holy Family Catholic Church, Poniatowski. Rev. Thomas Huff and Deacon Leroy
Knauf will preside. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
Friends may call Sunday from 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the church. Visitation will
continue on Monday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of services at the church.
There will be a parish rosary service on Sunday at 6:00 p.m. Peterson/Kraemer
