Mrs. Martha Castner celebrated her 90th birthday Sunday, June 14, 1970, at her
home, with a birthday dinner prepared by her two nieces, Mrs. Hugo Roesler of
Thorp and Mrs. Nina Wolters of Loyal.
Martha Castner is the daughter of the late Bushrad and Emily Davis, who
homesteaded in the Town of York (Clark Co., Wis.), near Granton. Martha was born
in 1880. She was married to Alfred Castner in 1905. Alfred Castner was killed in
an automobile accident in 1937. She has been a widow for 33 years.
Martha spent most of her life caring for the sick. She was Dr. McGonigal's Nurse
maid when he practiced medicine in Loyal, especially the mothers and babies. She
cared for the sick when the flu raged so in 1918.
Martha's recipe for a long life is plain living and trusting in God. At her age
now, she bakes her own bread, pie, cake and cookies. She washes her clothes at
the present time on a washboard.
Our wish for Aunt Martha is many more happy birthdays. At the present time she
is in pretty good health, except for hard of hearing and eyesight problems.
