Hizer, Carol (1948 - 20 December 1971)
Account of her death, but no obituary was found.
A first degree murder charge was filed Tuesday morning, December 21 in Jackson
County Court against Sharon Rose Bertrang, 25, of 1906 La Salle Street in Eau
Claire. Miss Bertrang is charged with the murder of Carol Hizer, 23, of Rt. 3
Black River Falls. Miss Hizer was shot in the head early Monday morning and died
at 9:00 that evening in Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse. Miss Bertrang had
appeared briefly in the County Court Monday when the charge of attempted murder
was placed against her.
Acting on behalf of the State of Wisconsin, Jackson County District Attorney
Robert W. Radcliffe read the complaint in the matter. The complaint had been
signed by Jackson County Sheriff Richard Miles who stated he had talked with a
witness to the alleged shooting. A .32 calibre pistol was the weapon involved.
The shooting allegedly occurred about six miles south of Black River Falls at
the junction of State Highway 27 and the Oak Ridge Road. Miss Bertrang and
another woman brought Miss Hizer directly to the Black River Memorial Hospital.
Miss Bertrang took the witness stand briefly and testified that she and her
family were without funds or the ability to secure an attorney and Carl Skolos
of Black River Falls and Carl Peplau of Augusta were appointed to defend her.
Judge Louis Drecktrah set the preliminary hearing for 11 a.m. January 4, and a
$10,000 cash bond has been set. The Maximum penalty for 1st degree murder in
Wisconsin is life imprisonment.
Miss Hizer was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Glen C. Hizer of Black River Falls.
Funeral arrangements for her are pending with Torgerson Funeral Service.
