The Neillsville American Legion Post 73 Ladies Auxiliary presented Janet Harrington of Neillsville with a certificate of appreciation Oct. 5 for her dedicated service to the organization.

Harrington has worked countless volunteer hours at the legion, with duties including preparing potatoes on Thursday morning and helping with many Friday Fish Fry nights.

Badger State Girls Nicole Pagenkopf and Cheryl Sebesta gave a brief talk on their experience. A nice thank-you letter was received from the Legion Riders for money given for 10 wreaths to be placed Dec. 12 at Veteran’s graves at King.

The Ladies Auxiliary also gave money to the Affairs and Rehabilitation Homeless Women Veterans program and to replace items in the ladies restroom at the Legion Hall.

It was noted that the piano from the former Masonic Lodge in Neillsville was donated to the Legion. Wayne Short refinished the piano and Sheri Malloch paid for the tuning. Malloch played the piano for the Don Lipscy Memorial service.

A rummage sale will be held Wednesday, Oct. 14, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Thursday, Oct. 15, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Setup day is Tuesday, Oct. 13.

Participation is requested at the Clark County Council of the American Ladies Auxiliary meeting, scheduled Oct. 12 at the Owen Senior Center.

Richard Harrington and Russel VandeBerg were honored Oct. 5 with certificates of recognition for their military service. Many family members and friends attended the potluck meal followed by the awards program.

Membership is reported at 151, with two new members joining. Those paying their dues by Dec. 31 will allow the local Post to keep more in the treasury, as the state is raising the dues in 2016.

It was decided to continue the monthly honoree programs on Monday nights, with social hour from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., with the potluck meal and program following. Meeting time is set at 7 p.m.

Jim Chadwick reported on the 7th District (eight counties) meeting held Oct. 3 in Melrose. The District reported losing 250 veterans. A candle was lit for each veteran lost, followed by a general prayer.

In 2017, Denise Rohan (a female veteran) will be campaigning to be National Commander. Post 73 is considering doing a fundraiser to help her raise funds to travel to all 50 state departments. She is seeking to become the first female national commander from Wisconsin.

Rick Thoma will look into purchasing guns for the gun raffle to be held in November for the deer hunters’ events at the Legion. Drawings will be held at the steak feed on the last Saturday of deer hunting.

Veteran’s Day activities will be held at the Neillsville and Granton schools Tuesday, Nov. 10, as the schools have a late start day scheduled Wednesday, Nov. 11.

Chadwick said the 7th District spring conference would be held at Tomah, with the 7th District fall conference scheduled at Waunakee.
