Gamel, Evelyn June (10 June 1925 - 8 October 2015)
Evelyn June (Wegner) Gamel, 90, formerly of Granton, passed away Thursday, Oct.
8, 2015, at the Clark County Rehabilitation & Living Center in Owen.
Evelyn was born June 10, 1925, in Ewing, NE, to Henry and Bertha Wegner. She was
a 1943 graduate of Ewing High School and completed two years of college in
Norfolk, NE. There, she worked as a theater usher and was employed as a riveter
in the airplane plant during WWII. Evelyn corresponded with, and soon after his
discharge, married her hero soldier in 1945 at the ranch home of her parents.
“From prairie land to woodland; from sand to rounded stone”
In 1956, she and her husband, Lester, uprooted themselves and bought a farm
south of Neillsville. Living there 13 years, they later moved to Sherwood and
then bought a home in Granton to live out their golden years.
Ever mesmerized by the woodlands of Wisconsin, the wildlife and diversity of the
landscapes, their happiest times were spent taking short trips around, finding
new places to go and enjoying the scenery. Evelyn loved to sing and in time was
asked to join a group called “The Sunshine Girls” that visited and entertained
elderly people at various nursing homes around the country. Long noted and
remembered for her beautiful soprano voice, her quilting talents were also
second to none. Many babies and families were recipients of her artistry.
“From there to here, ner back again for Heaven is now their home.”
Survivors include her daughters, Carol Ann Gamel of Marshfield and Susan (Jerry)
Stangl of West Allis; six grandchildren, Kari Lea (Stangl) Yoel of West Allis,
Bryon Yeager, Samantha (Yeager) Huff and Crystal (Morris) Knisley of North
Carolina, Frankie John Moeller and Ritajane Moeller of Granton; and several
great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters; and infant boy; her
eldest daughter, Laura lee; and her beloved husband, Lester.
“Long respected and dually remembered will the understandings felt, the
longevity of joy in their union and the family created by their love”
A Memorial Service for Evelyn will be held Thursday, Oct. 22, at 4 p.m. at the
united Methodist Church in Granton.
