American Legion Honors Veteran
Edward Henchen
By Todd Schmidt
Neillsville American Legion Post 73 will honor Edward Henchen, Frederick Grap
Jr. and Norman Poppe for their military service during a special program Monday,
Nov. 3. Social hour starts at 4:30 p.m., with a 5:30 potluck meal and a
recognition program to follow.
Henchen was drafted into the U. S. Army in January 1955. He was stationed at Ft.
Leonard, MO, and trained as an engineer.
Henchen was transferred to Camp Walters, TX, which was an Air Force base located
near Ft. Worth, TX that had been purchased by the Army. He worked in the quarry,
which produced materials used in building helicopter pads. The facility was then
converted into a helicopter pilot training camp.
Henchen’s father was a WWI veteran and his three brothers were also military
veterans.
Henchen received his discharge in December 1957.
He operated the family farm until 1991, when he began working at the Nelson
Filter plant in Neillsville. Henchen sold the farm in 1993 and moved to
Neillsville with his sister, Julia.
Henchen retired in 1998. He moved to a new home on 17th Street.
Henchen was an avid bowler for many years, and has a few 300 games to his
credit. He enjoys playing Sheepshead and Setback card games with family and
friends. He remains in good health, mainly due to talking up to four miles each
day.
(Shown l-r), Edward Henchen, Frederick Grap, Jr. and Norman Poppe are honored for their military service Monday evening by Neillsville American Legion Post 73.
