Frederick Grap, Jr.

Neillsville American Legion Post 73 will honor Edward Henchen, Frederick Grap
Jr. and Norman Poppe for their military service during a special program Monday,
Nov. 3. Social hour starts at 4:30 p.m., with a 5:30 potluck meal and a
recognition program to follow.
Grap was age 18 when he volunteered to join the U. S. Army. He was later drafted
in June 1954.
Grap was stationed at Ft. Leonard, MO, where he was trained as a mechanic. He
was then transferred to Ft. Lee, VA, working in supply.
Later on, Grap was transferred to Ft. Shafter, Honolulu, HI, for duty including
supply, mail clerk, and arms room for the military police.
Grap was discharged in March 1956.
He married Mildred Sladek in September 1956. They lived in the Neillsville area
for a short time, as he helped his parents on the family farm and worked as a
milk hauler.
They moved to Random Lake, where Grap worked at a canning factory. In 1962, they
purchased a farm on CTH G. They sold the farm in 1989 due to his accident. They
moved a short distance down the road to the place where they still live today.
They go dancing often. He is known for his hobbies of raising sweet corn and
making maple syrup.
He served three years on the Clark Electric Board of Directors and seven years
on the Farmers Union Board of Directors.
They have four children, 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
