Mildred Margaret Haas was born on January 18, 1930, in Thorp, WI, the daughter
of Casper and Laura (Baures) Haas. She was raised on the family farm and
received her education in the Thorp area, graduating from Thorp High School in
1947. Mildred attended Medford Normal School, in Medford, before her marriage to
Edward W. Smith on October 16, 1948, at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, in Thorp.
While raising a family and farming alongside her husband, Mildred also worked at
Thorp Finance and ITT Life for almost 20 years, and up until this last spring,
worked 31 years at Reit’s Garden Center in Stanley.
Mildred will always be remembered for her molasses ginger cookies and gently
nature. When we think of her working full-time, helping with the milking on the
farm, and raising seven children, she was truly a person of determination, who
did things that amazed us.
She was a member of St. Bernard-St. Hedwig Catholic Church and its PCCW and a
member of the Thorp American Legion Auxiliary.
Mildred had many interests, but especially loved spending time with her family,
flowers, gardening, crocheting, quilting, baking and canning.
She will be dearly missed by her children: Gloria (Joel) Smith-Meyer of
Minneapolis, Don (Luz) Smith of Raleigh, NC, Joni Seefeldt of Wausau, Joyce
(Tom) Klement of Merrill, Duane (Wanda) Smith of Thorp, Janet (Rich) Abramczak
of Stanley, Geri (Joe) Borowski of Thorp; 25 grandchildren; 35
great-grandchildren; three brothers: Casper Haas of Thorp, David (Pauline) Haas
of Thorp, Denny (Marcia) Haas of Appleton; one sister: Bernice Seaman of Thorp;
seven sisters-in-law: Kathy Haas of Thorp, Liz Haas of Black River Falls, Marian
(Andy) Shuk of Stanley, Ruth Komarek of ST. Charles, IL, Therese Jenness of
Thorp, Lilly Smith of Minnesota, Margie Smith of Arizona; special friends:
Dwight, Roxan and Jason Isenberger; her co-workers at Reit’s: Betty Merle and
Judy; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ed, on September 1, 2000;
three sisters: Dorothy Butterfield, Elaine Reynolds, Alvera Lemieux; and three
brothers: Henry, LaVerne and Edward Haas.
