Niewolny, George (7 NOV 1927 - 4 OCT 2012)

George Niewolny, 84, of Wausau, passed away Thursday, October 4, 2012, at Aspirus Wausau Hospital.

He was born November 7, 1927, in Athens, to the late Walter and Rose (Klawinski) Niewolny. George served his country during WWII in the U.S. Army, specializing in heavy artillery. He trained with the 10th Mountain Division, and learned to ski, mountain climb, and mule pack training, in Cooper Hill, CO. On August 26, 1953,

George was united in marriage to Patricia Urmanski, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Edgar. In his earlier years George was first employed at Connor Forest Industries, and then for 26 years at Wisconsin Fuel and Light, retiring in 1990. George and Pat enjoyed traveling and camping throughout the states especially their visits to Florida and Hawaii. George was a gifted woodworker, helping build homes for his kids, as well as, making gazebo bird feeders. He had a wide variety of interests that included growing all types of delicious fruit in his backyard, wine making, deer hunting and fishing.

Survivors include his wife, Pat, of Wausau; four children, Michael (Marcia) Niewolny, Karen (Dave) Wendorf, Kenneth Niewolny, and Linda (Steve) Radtke, all of Wausau; 8 grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; 3 step-grandchildren; 4 step great-grandchildren; a sister, Gloria (Harry) Tagliaferri, of Mishawaka, IN; and 3 sisters-in-law, Ethel, Imogene and Lois Niewolny all of Wausau.

George was preceded in death by 5 brothers and 5 sisters.

The funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 10, 2012, at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church, Wausau. Father David Rybicki will officiate. Immediately following the mass at church, military honors will be conducted by VFW Burns Post #388. Entombment will be in Memorial Chapel Mausoleum, at Restlawn Memorial Park.

Visitation will be Tuesday, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., at the Helke Funeral Home, Wausau, with a parish rosary service at 6:30 p.m.; and again Wednesday, at church, beginning at 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. The family would like to thank Dr. Rengel and staff, Dr. Asplund, the Aspirus Wausau Hospital staff, and the Colonial Manor care givers for the special care given and kindness shown to George over the past several years.
