Payleitner, Claudia (Spelling Champ -1974)
Claudia Payleitner, and eighth grader in the Neillsville Public Schools and
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Val Payleitner, was crowned Clark County spelling
champion Tuesday afternoon.
Claudia won her championship in a bee which included champions from schools all
over Clark County. She defeated Owen’s representative in the final rounds.
In order to win, Claudia had to first spell correctly the word “menace,” which
her Owen opponent flubbed on. Then to clinch the match, she correctly negotiated
the alphabetical intricacies of the word “neutral.”
Claudia’s eighth grade teacher and coach is Mrs. Nancy Haigh. She now is
qualified to enter the state spelling contest in Madison.
