The Greenwood Gleaner is now officially 67 years old. This newspaper was started
in 1891 by W.H. Spears, because he felt the city of Greenwood needed a
newspaper. A few years later Geo. Begley joined Mr. Spears as a partner. Later
editors were H.H. Hartson and J.E. Noyes.
In 1916 Wm. Neuenfeldt took possession of the Gleaner and in 1946 he sold to the
present owner, his son, Albert.
The year 1956, as was the case during the past years, was an eventful one. Many
of our friends and relatives passed away, many of our young people were married,
and other news items of great prominence were recorded in the pages of this
paper. Perhaps the news that was outstanding during 1956 was the building of a
temporary bridge and road in less than 10 days. This event was given space
continually for over 4 weeks and we also had a running account of the happenings
were the fine picture taken by Al Schwarze, of the completed new bride and
highway. Greenwood also received statewide publicity at that time.
What 1957 holds in store for the Greenwood Gleaner is not definite, but as in
the past, we will do our utmost to continue being a service to Greenwood and the
surrounding areas. Our hope is that you will continue to use this paper for your
advertising messages to your customers. We also urge more use of this paper for
your news items. We need your assistance to make 1957 the best year yet.
Join us in celebrated our 67th year.
