The Clark County Historical Society (CCHS) held its fall business meeting Nov. 7
to elect officers and to celebrate its 50th anniversary. The meeting was hosted
by the Thorp Area Historical Society and held at the Thorp Public Library.
Members representing Stanley, Colby, Neillsville, Owen and Spencer viewed the
original 1965 charter from the State Historical Society of Wisconsin and the
Wisconsin Council for Local History. A timeline showed the decades of CCHS
activity and its accomplishments, particularly the development of the 1897 Clark
County Jail and Sheriff’s Residence and the Colby Rural Arts Museum.
After a delicious potluck lunch provided by the Thorp group and individual
members, Janet Seymour, field representative for the Wisconsin Council for Local
History, shared tips on encouraging youth participation in history. Individual
members also added ideas they have used. Seymour presented the president
Charlotte Tetzlaff with a framed certificate recognizing the 50th anniversary
and Lee Kaschinska with an individual award in recognition of his service to the
Local History Council.
Each member group of CCHS has different resources and experience to share with
the others. Some have physical collections in museum buildings, some have
extensively digitized their photos and documents, some have more events and
activities, but all meet to share their information.
