A fire Friday morning, April 5th, 1957, completely destroyed a modern dwelling
and most of the furnishings on the farm of Mrs. Mary Bushman, about 4 miles east
and 1 mile south of here (Greenwood, Clark Co., Wis.). Mrs. Bushman estimated
the loss at about $15,000, which was partly covered by insurance.
Mrs. Bushman said she arouse about 6:30 a.m. and put some wood on the furnace
fire and then returned to bed. Shortly afterwards she heard a slight explosion
and before long flames pured from register openings and smoke filled the house.
Barefooted and clad only in night clothing, she ran to the barn to notify her
son, Donald, who resides with her on the farm. He called for help. The Loyal
rural fire department prevented flames from spreading to adjoining buildings.
Members of the Greenwood Fire department also went out and helped to keep the
fire under control, and with the help of the neighbors, saved some of the items
from the downstairs rooms. However, all clothing was lost.
Mrs. Bushman and Donald are residing with her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and
Mrs. Dalbert Mondlock.
