Ehlert, Gene D. (18 DEC 1947 - 18 NOV 2015)

Gene D. Ehlert, age 67, passed away Wednesday, November 18 at Aspirus Hospice House, Wausau where he had resided for the past 5 days following a courageous 6 year battle with cancer that was a result of exposure to Agent Orange during his military service in Vietnam.

Services will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, November 24 at Hemer Funeral Home, Medford where there will also be military rites performed by the Medford Area Military Honors Team. Rev. James LeMaster will officiate. Interment of his cremated remains will take place at Central Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery, King, WI on Wednesday, November 25.

Visitation will be from 5-7 PM on Monday, November 23 at Hemer Funeral Home, Medford and also from 10 AM until the time of services at 11 AM on Tuesday, November 24.

Gene was born December 18, 1947 at the Township of Taft, Taylor County, to George and Edna Ehlert.

He attended Medford elementary schools and was a 1966 graduate of Medford High School. Following his service in Vietnam, he earned an Associate’s Degree in diesel mechanics from Northeast Technical College in Sturgeon Bay, WI. In 1994 he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in mathematics from UW-Stevens Point and later completed his Masters of Education in secondary education from Viterbo University in La Crosse.

Gene was married June 20, 1970 at Zion Ev. Lutheran Church, Stetsonville to Jayne E. Boxrucker, she survives.

He was a US Army veteran of the Vietnam War. After the service, he drove truck and worked as a diesel mechanic for Tombstone Pizza Corp. for periods of time. After he finished his education, he taught school at the Medford Area Middle School and Medford Area High School until June of 2010 when ill health forced his retirement. He enjoyed traveling out West, hunting, camping, spending time with his grandchildren and anything outdoors. Gene was a member of the Christian Bible Fellowship of Stetsonville.

Gene is survived by his mother, Edna Krohn of Medford; wife, Jayne E. (Boxrucker) Ehlert of Medford; children Trisha (Micheal) Houle; Christopher (Tiffany) Ehlert; Timothy (Christy) Ehlert; Elizabeth (Paul) Landmann; Jacob (Cathy) Ehlert; 14 grandchildren; three sisters; and his in-laws, Marge & Wendy Boxrucker of Stetsonville.

He was predeceased by his father, George Ehlert.
