Lester Elmer entered the United States Air Force on Sept. 30, 1950 as Aviation
Cadet and received his basic training at James Connally Base at Waco Texas.
On Dec. 15, 1951 he received his Silver Wings and was commissioned 2nd Lt. at
Williams Air Force Base, Arizona. He then spent a short time at Nellis Air Force
Base in Nevada, in combat training.
In March 1952 he left for Korea, where he completed 120 combat missions. While
there he received the Distinguished Flying Cross Air Medal, two Oak Leaf
clusters and was commissioned First Lt.
In January 1953 he returned to the United States and was stationed at Laughlin
Air Foce Base, Texas, until November 1955, when he took up duties at Williams
Air Force Base, Arizona.
He received his Captain Commission in Feruary 1956 and on April 12, 1957 he
entered Squadron Officers School at Maxwell Air Force Base, Montgomery, Alabama,
where he received his diploma on July 26, 1957. He also received a Certificate
of Recognition in the Men's Glee Club at this base. He returned to Williams Air
Force Base in Arizona.
Lester is a graduate of the Greenwood High School with the class of 1948.
Capt. And Mrs. Elmer and family spent a week with his parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Ernest Elmer and his brother, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Elmer, enroute from Alabama to
Williams Air Force Base.
