Scovel, John Ezra (21 FEB 1879 – 31 OCT 1957)

John Ezra Scovel, son of John and Mary (Olson) Scovel, was born in Greenwood (Clark Co.), Wis. Feb. 21, 1879 and passed away at a nursing home in Minneapolis, Minn. on Thursday, Oct. 31, 1957.

He spent his early life near his birthplace in the township of Beaver in the LaTart community, and in middle life moved to Ladysmith, Wis., and from there to Waterloo, Iowa, where he resided for several years. He spent his last years in Minneapolis, where he was employed until his health failed.

In the year 1916 he was united in marriage to Jennie Hart of Ontario, Wis., who was his companion until she passed away in 1934.

He joined the West Beaver Community Church in his early life, and later transferred his membership to the Church of Christ at Ladysmith. He was a faithful Christian all his life and was held in high esteem by all who knew him.

He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Maud Christensen of Marysville, Wash.; by two step-daughters, Mrs. Elsie Wallace of Minneapolis and Mrs. Lela Wallace of Elgin, Ill.; by three step-sons, Elwin Hart and Albert Prosser of Waterloo, Iowa; Lester Prosser of Bruce, Wis.; and by many nieces and nephews, among whom are David, Ralph, Henry, Rufus and Myron Thwing, Mrs. Ruth Stowe, Mrs. Bernice Ehlert, Mrs. Pearl Fox, Mrs. Seeta Rasmussen, Mrs. Lizzie Hanson, Mrs. Beulah Barfnecht, Mrs. Norma Strop, Mrs. Winnie Garrett, Mrs. Audrey Pickelman, Donald Redwine, Lila and Clarence Christensen, Merle Robinson, and others, and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held in Grace Methodist Church at Greenwood on Saturday, Nov. 2nd. Rev. Mrs. Ethel Nulton officiated. Interment was in the Greenwood Cemetery beside his parents and a daughter.

During the service Mrs. E. H. Ratzloff and Mrs. Earl Richardson sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Abide With Me," accompanied on the piano by Mrs. Donald Dixon.

The pallbearers were Joe Walter, Richard Walter, John Speich, Dave Reese, Elmer Stafford and Paul Acker.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Mary, four sisters, Anna, Mrs. Clara Thwing, Mrs. John (Abbie) Redwine, and Mrs. Lizzie Robinson.

Wilcox, Sparta; Mrs. Boyce Wilcox, Tomah.
